Change to Semester Grades for Midterm Exams
A comprehensive review of the district data associated with the 2011-2012 administrations of the Algebra 1, Geometry and Biology midterms to middle school and high school students; and the 2012-2013 administration of the Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology and U.S. History midterms has led to a decision to eliminate from the calculation of semester averages, student midterm exam scores that adversely affected the student’s quarter one/quarter two average, as assigned by their classroom teacher.
Students whose semester average improved via their midterm examination score will continue to have the score calculated into their average; hence, no change in their grade point averages. Students for whom the midterm exam grade is eliminated may experience a positive change in their grade point averages.
Virtual Education Open Enrollment
Florida Statute 1002.45 requires Florida schools districts to offer a virtual instruction program to students in grades K-12. A virtual instruction program offers students a flexible option to attend public school using distance and online learning technologies. The enrollment window for Broward County students entering grades 6 through 12 opens May 1 and closes September 30, 2013. Enrollment for students entering grades K-5 opens April 19 and closes July 19, 2013. Students must meet criteria to qualify for enrollment. More information about virtual instruction program options, including enrollment criteria, can be obtained online at www.bved.net or by calling Broward Virtual School at 754-321-1100.
Textbook Collection
The state of Florida provides most of the textbooks used in our school. The books are on loan to the students who are responsible for keeping them clean and free from abuse. If a book is lost or damaged, the student to whom it was issued is held responsible for payment. Beginning the week of May 6th Plantation Middle will be collecting textbooks. Listed below is the collection schedule. This schedule has been designed with three ideas in mind; not to interfere with students’ preparations for final exams, staggering collection dates so students do not need to bring in more than one book on any day and allowing enough time for teachers to complete inventory and post student obligations as needed.
Collection Dates
Language Arts May 6-10th
Electives June 4th and 5th
Math May 22nd and 23rd
Social Studies May 20th and 21st
Science No Collection
